Deze editie bekijken we twee Rotterdamse films van Rotterdamse makers, over wonen in ons Rotterdam.

Over Berichten uit de Hunkerbunker:

Tijdens de coronapandemie maakt fotograaf en filmmaker Carel van Hees (2KM2 – het heden van de stad, IFFR 2006) van zijn thuis, de Rotterdamse RVS-flat, noodgedwongen zijn microkosmos. Hij portretteert de inwoners van deze flat, wiens werelden plotseling bestaan uit hun appartementen in dit ooit voor alleenstaande werkende vrouwen bedoelde gebouw, dat ook wel bekendstaat als de Hunkerbunker. Al snel treft hij achter een deur op de tiende etage de 106-jarige Gerarda van Nimwegen, die haar appartement al vijf jaar niet meer heeft verlaten, maar gedurende haar lange leven vele andere crises meemaakte, zoals de Spaanse griep, de armoede tijdens het interbellum en het bombardement op de stad − overigens zonder haar gevoel voor humor te verliezen. Haar leven komt tot stilstand in het appartement waar zij al sinds haar 44e woont. Een liefdevol eerbetoon aan een bijzondere bewoner van de Hunkerbunker.

Wanneer filmmaker Hannah Kersten in de Rotterdamse wijk Crooswijk komt wonen, voelt ze zich aanvankelijk trots om deel uit te maken van het “echte Rotterdam”. Deze persoonlijke korte film onderzoekt echter waarom deze trots misplaatst was. Terwijl Kerstens fragmentarische straatcinematografie de texturale details van haar nieuwe omgeving vastlegt, reflecteert haar voice-over op de beladen spanning tussen gentrificatie, uitzetting en ontheemding. Kersten stelt uiteindelijk de vraag: als de stad voortdurend verandert, wat is dan het “echte” Rotterdam?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, photographer and filmmaker Carel van Hees (2KM2 – The Present of the City, IFFR 2006) was forced to turn his home, the Rotterdam RVS building, into his microcosm. He portrays the residents of this apartment complex, whose worlds suddenly shrink to their own flats in what was once intended as housing for single working women—commonly known as the Hunkerbunker.

Soon, he discovers 106-year-old Gerarda van Nimwegen behind a door on the tenth floor. She has not left her apartment for five years, yet throughout her long life, she has endured many crises, including the Spanish flu, the interwar poverty, and the Rotterdam bombing—without ever losing her sense of humor. Her life has come to a standstill in the apartment where she has lived since she was 44. This film is a loving tribute to an extraordinary resident of the Hunkerbunker.

About Nu woon ik hier (Now I Live Here):

When filmmaker Hannah Kersten moves to the Rotterdam neighborhood of Crooswijk, she initially feels proud to be part of the “real Rotterdam.” However, this personal short film explores why that pride was misplaced.

As Kersten’s fragmented street cinematography captures the textural details of her new surroundings, her voice-over reflects on the loaded tensions of gentrification, eviction, and displacement. Ultimately, she poses the question: if the city is constantly changing, what is the “real” Rotterdam?
