Dokhuis & NIVOZ are looking for films that have something to say about education, upbringing, living together, and the encounters and relationships that emerge within them.

Open Call: Submit Your Film — On Growing Up, Learning and Living Together

(For Dutch, scroll down) Dokhuis is looking for films that have something to say about education, upbringing, living together, and the encounters and relationships that emerge within them.

Every month — and every week in March — Dokhuis, in collaboration with Stichting NIVOZ, programmes documentaries and fiction films that touch on what is truly at stake in pedagogical practice. Films that do not illustrate, but question. Films that do not provide answers, but create space.

We invite filmmakers to submit their work.

What are we looking for?

Films — documentary, fiction, essay, or short form — that engage with pedagogical and social themes, such as:

• the teacher as a human being, in relation to themselves, their students and the systems around them
• social issues such as human rights, community building and inequality of opportunity that influence the development of young people
• growing up, learning, being seen — or precisely not being seen
• schools as places of encounter, power, hope, community or tension
• the question of what it means to remain human within institutions

We are not looking for educational films or promotional productions. We are looking for work that speaks in its own language and dares to put something at stake.

Who can submit?

Everyone: independent filmmakers, (former) students, teachers, school teams, journalists and artists. Professional production is not a requirement — having something meaningful to say is.

Technical requirements

• Running time: 5 to 60 minutes
• Format: digital — downloadable (a link to a secure screener via Vimeo, WeTransfer or similar)
• Language: no restrictions; Dutch or English subtitles however are required
• Previously screened work is welcome; works that are still being completed can also be submitted

What can you expect?

• Screening at Dokhuis — an intimate, professionally equipped venue in Rotterdam-Zuid, with an engaged audience from the education and cultural-education fields.
• Networking — as a filmmaker, you will have the opportunity to connect with teachers, school leaders, researchers and policymakers active within NIVOZ and its network. Not simply as an audience member, but as a conversation partner: every screening is accompanied by a discussion afterwards.
• Visibility through NIVOZ channels — website, newsletter and social media — and inclusion in the Dokhuis programme, which reaches people across the education sector.
• Fee of up to €250, excluding VAT.

Send your submission to info@nivoz.nl with the subject line: Film submission [film title].

Please address your message to Hosein Danesh.

Include:

1. Screener link (secure link if preferred)
2. Short description of the film (max. 200 words)
3. Name(s) of filmmaker(s) and contact details
4. Year of completion / expected completion date

Deadline — 1 December 2026

Submissions will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Selected films will be programmed as part of the National Education Film Month in March 2027 and discussed during a public evening with the filmmaker or a conversation partner from NIVOZ.

Dokhuis is the cultural-pedagogical centre of NIVOZ in Rotterdam-Zuid. We programme dialogue, film, conversations, workshops and encounters around the big questions of living together, upbringing and education. Not as answers, but as encounters.

Dokhuis is a place — the home of Stichting NIVOZ, the Netherlands Institute for Education and Upbringing. Oproep: stuur je film in – over opgroeien, leren en samenleven 

Dokhuis zoekt films die iets te zeggen hebben over onderwijs, opvoeding, samenleven en de ontmoetingen en relaties die daarin ontstaan. 

Elke maand- en in maart iedere week- programmeert Dokhuis vanuit Stichting NIVOZ documentaires en speelfilms die raken aan wat er werkelijk op het spel staat in pedagogische praktijken. Films die niet illustreren, maar bevragen. Die geen antwoorden geven, maar ruimte openen. 

We nodigen makers uit hun werk in te sturen. 

Wat zoeken we? 

Films – documentaire, fictie, essay, korte vorm – die gaan over pedagogische en maatschappelijke inhoud, zoals: 

• de leraar als mens, in relatie tot zichzelf, leerlingen en systemen 

• maatschappelijke vraagstukken over mensenrechten, community opbouwen en kansenongelijkheid die van invloed zijn op de vorming van jongeren 

• opgroeien, leren, gezien worden — of juist niet gezien worden 

• scholen als plekken van ontmoeting, macht, hoop, community of spanning 

• de vraag wat het betekent om mens te blijven tussen instituties 

We zijn niet op zoek naar lesfilms of pr-producties. We zoeken werk dat een eigen taal spreekt, dat iets op het spel durft te zetten. 

Wie kan inzenden? 

Iedereen: onafhankelijke filmmakers, (oud-)studenten, docenten, schoolteams, journalisten, kunstenaars. Professionele productie is geen vereiste – zeggingskracht wel. 

 

Technische voorwaarden 

• Speelduur: min 5 tot 60 minuten 

• Formaat: digitaal – downloadbaar (link naar beveiligde screener via Vimeo, WeTransfer of vergelijkbaar)  

• Taal: geen beperking; Nederlandse of Engelse ondertiteling is vereist 

• Eerder vertoond werk is welkom; ook werk in afronding kan worden aangemeld 

 

Wat kun je verwachten? 

• Vertoning in de zaal van Dokhuis – een intieme, professioneel uitgeruste locatie in Rotterdam-Zuid met een betrokken publiek uit het onderwijs- en cultureel-educatieveld. 

• Netwerk – als maker kom je in contact met leraren, schoolleiders, onderzoekers en beleidsmakers die actief zijn binnen NIVOZ en haar netwerk. Niet als publiek op afstand, maar als gesprekspartner: elke vertoning gaat gepaard met een nabeschouwing. 

• Zichtbaarheid via de NIVOZ-kanalen – website, nieuwsbrief en sociale media – en opname in het Dokhuis-programma dat door het hele onderwijsveld wordt gevolgd. 

• Vergoeding van maximaal € 250,– excl. btw.

Deadline — 1 december 2026 

Inzendingen worden doorlopend beoordeeld. Geselecteerde films worden geprogrammeerd binnen het Nationale Onderwijs Film Maand in maart 2027 en besproken in een publieksavond met de maker of een gesprekspartner vanuit NIVOZ. 

Over Dokhuis 

Dokhuis is het cultureel-pedagogisch centrum van NIVOZ in Rotterdam-Zuid. We programmeren dialoog, film, gesprek, workshops en ontmoeting rondom de grote vragen van samenleven, opvoeding en onderwijs. Niet als antwoord, maar als ontmoeting.
