As we begin the year -2026- with fresh resolutions; questioning what we want, where we fit, and what truly works for us, the central theme of this edition of iffr filmclub is Belonging.
This programme brings together three short films by Rotterdam-based-or-related makers that explore identity, embodiment, and the search for connection. Through poetic reflection and intimate documentary storytelling, the films examine how we relate to ourselves, our bodies, our essence, and the communities around us.
The evening opens with Pietà of Sorrow (2024) by Vera de Costa which follows an embodied narrative of birth and becoming. Within living natural landscapes, the body exists as part of the land itself. Fabric becomes skin, skin becomes earth, and earth becomes divine, held within soft boundaries of humanness.
Next is Coming In (2022) by Esmée van Loon, which questions the unwritten rules surrounding coming out. Why is coming out considered a rite of passage for non-heterosexual people, but unnecessary for straight people? Through candid conversations, the film reflects on for whom we actually come out: ourselves, or the people around us.
The programme concludes with Boxing Against the Binary (2024), also by Esmée van Loon. This intimate documentary portrays Queer Gym Rotterdam, a safe and inclusive space where queer people can exercise and reconnect with their bodies outside heteronormative beauty standards and fitness ideals. Through conversations with members, trainers, and founder Romy, the film highlights the physical and emotional necessity of spaces where queer communities can discover strength on their own terms.
After the movies there is room for a q & a with the makers, and to share. Films are Dutch with English subtitles.

Aan het begin van het jaar 2026, met frisse goede voornemens en vragen over wat we willen, waar we thuishoren en wat echt voor ons werkt, staat deze editie van IFFR filmclub in het teken van Belonging.
Dit programma brengt drie korte films samen van Rotterdamse en aan Rotterdam gelieerde makers, die identiteit, belichaming en de zoektocht naar verbinding onderzoeken. Via poëtische reflectie en intieme documentairevertellingen verkennen de films hoe we ons verhouden tot onszelf, onze lichamen, onze essentie en de gemeenschappen om ons heen.
De avond opent met Pietà of Sorrow (2024) van Vera de Costa, een belichaamd verhaal over geboorte en wording. In levende, natuurlijke landschappen bestaat het lichaam als onderdeel van het land zelf. Stof wordt huid, huid wordt aarde en aarde wordt het goddelijke – gedragen binnen de zachte grenzen van het mens-zijn.
Daarna volgt Coming In (2022) van Esmée van Loon, waarin de ongeschreven regels rondom uit de kast komen worden bevraagd. Waarom wordt coming out gezien als een rite de passage voor niet-heteroseksuele mensen, maar is dat niet nodig voor heteroseksuele mensen? Aan de hand van openhartige gesprekken reflecteert de film op de vraag: voor wie komen we eigenlijk uit de kast – voor onszelf, of voor de mensen om ons heen?
Het programma sluit af met Boxing Against the Binary (2024), eveneens van Esmée van Loon. Deze intieme documentaire portretteert Queer Gym Rotterdam, een veilige en inclusieve plek waar queer mensen kunnen sporten en opnieuw verbinding kunnen maken met hun lichaam, buiten heteronormatieve schoonheids- en fitnessidealen. In gesprekken met leden, trainers en oprichter Romy laat de film de fysieke en emotionele noodzaak zien van ruimtes waar queer gemeenschappen op hun eigen voorwaarden kracht kunnen ontdekken.
Na de films is er ruimte voor een Q&A met de makers en om samen te delen en na te praten. de films zijn Nederlands, met Engelse ondertiteling.

Film Club is an initiative by International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR). It brings (aspiring) film lovers, young filmmakers, and creatives together at various locations across the city to watch films and share their interests. At the Film Club in Dokhuis, we focus on films by Rotterdam-based makers or with a local Rotterdam flavor.
